Visitor Information

The Great North Museum: Hancock is welcoming North East schools (KS2-3) to unearth a rich tapestry of languages, foster connections, and celebrate diversity. Explore our galleries through a linguistic lens and immerse pupils in the languages of our collections, inspiring them to discover the beauty of words, connect across cultures, and broaden their horizons.

On 20th and 24th March, schools can book for a carousel of activities linked to different museum collections, including workshops supported by museum and university staff and students, as well as teacher-led activities.

Activities on offer include:

  • Workshop:
    • 20th March - Aimed at Y3-7 -  Explore Maori language and culture through a craft, with the ENACT team from Newcastle University
    • 24th March - Aimed at Y6-9 - Our Ancient Roots with Dr Steph Holton - find out about the Ancient languages hidden in our everyday English.
  • Join our one-off trail, exploring the galleries to find objects and special guests and learn language facts from them.
  • Practice your French, German or Spanish in the galleries with our MFL worksheets, supported by Language Ambassadors from Newcastle University
  • Choose one more from:
    • Egyptian Hieroglyphics crack the code
    • Translate Latin inscriptions from Hadrian's Wall
    • Borrow a story bag: The word collector
    • Free choice time to explore the galleries.

Timings are 10am - 2pm approximately. Pupils will need to bring a packed lunch and drink. We will provide a space for you to eat, picnic-style.
