Thirsty for something different?
Try our historic Roman beer

A first for the Great North Museum: Hancock, we've created our very own Roman beer - 'Atrecti Discipulus' - translated as “Atrectus' Student”. Atrectus was the earliest known brewer to be based in the North of England and is mentioned on one of the Vindolanda tablets.
This unique ale combines our venue’s close connection to the Romans with the incredible talents of two of the region's most well-respected brewers.
Created in association with Stubrew and Northern Alchemy, this dark, smoky and soured ale was made historically using herbs and spices that would have been available to Atrectus during his time near Hadrian’s Wall. Using modern brewing methods, we’ve brought this ancient ale right up to date, for you, our friends and visitors.
This exclusive beer is available to buy at the Great North Museum: Hancock shop, priced £3 for a can or two cans for £5. Supplies are limited.
