Meet Sylvia Humphrey

Keeper of Geology

My current responsibilities include the care and interpretation of the fossil, mineral and rock collections at the Great North Museum: Hancock and Sunderland Museum, which include internationally important material.  In addition, I provide an identification service.

I previously worked as a Geologist/Petrologist at the British Museum. My areas of specialist knowledge include:  gemmology, ceramic petrology, local geology and mineralogy, Permian fish and palaeoart.

I worked with researchers on projects that include the Sound of the Singing Sands, Drawing the Hancock Museum and the JISC database of British Type Fossils.
