Aimed at Key Stage 2 (ages 7-11)

Join the Great North Museum: Hancock team for a day of virtual Ancient Greek activities. Watch virtual tours, take part in live workshops and relax for story time. You can even submit your questions to one of our curators! 

Sessions are designed for a mix of Key Stage 2 children (ages 7-11) in school, at home and other settings

You can sign up to as many of the sessions as you like

Joining information and additional resources will be circulated closer to the date. 

Home learners and children not in a school setting are also welcome to take part.

Please note that for Safeguarding, adults not accompanying a participating child will not be permitted into any of these sessions. 

Event Content

Session 1 – Virtual Museum tour 

9:30 - 10am 

Come on a tour of the Ancient Greek gallery at the Great North Museum: Hancock. Discover some of the wonderful objects we have amongst our collection. Use our ‘Can you Find?’ sheet to see if you can spot our key objects. Then join in with our quiz, can you guess what our object is from just a few clues?

Session 2 – Workshop: Mythical monsters

10:30 - 11:15am

This interactive workshop focuses on how Hoplite soldiers used mythical monsters to intimidate their enemies. Learn about mythical monsters, take part in a drawing challenge and create your own hoplite shield.

Session 3 – Ask and Answer 

1- 1:45pm

Do you have any burning questions about Ancient Greece or the Great North Museum: Hancock collection? Submit your questions for our Curator of Archaeology to answer!

Make sure to get your question to us by Thursday 30th June for a chance to get it answered. 

We may not be able to answer all questions live but will do our best to include as many as possible. 

Session 4 – Hidden lives: Ancient Greek women and children.

2 – 2.45pm 

This interactive workshop gives students an insight into the home life of women and children in Ancient Greece. Investigate how life would have been different for women and children, two groups of people who are not usually studied in ancient civilizations.

Please note that this Online Ancient Greece Day is open for multiple schools and/or home learners to book. We will instruct all participants to turn cameras and microphones off during the sessions.

For safeguarding reasons adults not accompanying a participating child will not be admitted into any of the sessions.
